December
Started painting in oils again (after 17 year pause) a few weeks ago. I love it - the sensuality, the richness of the color, the conscious slowing down to tap into root and craft accordingly. Dancing line between thought and feeling - at a certain point the deciphering is useless. How beautiful can a color actually be? 2008 will be about learning to navigate in fog.

Idea in bath and past few days to paint in oil. Slow. Let works take as long as they want. No aim to show. Just paint. One color at a time. Rich. Multi layered. Minimal. Dots. Focus. Essence. Centering. Presencing. Stillness. Letting go.

What do I love? Making things for people by hand.
Where do I find joy? Painting.

My belief is that change occurs through shifts of perception, which lead to shifts in action. I also believe that through intimacy we gain insight to "other" and thus learn ways to mend, renew, or reweave the fabric of relation.

The story central to this work (Pulse: The Raven Series) is that of human presence opening and unfolding. From a field of textured complexity, each painting evokes a moment of clarity when pure, implicit spirit comes to the fore.
An instinctive lens associates yellows with joy, lilacs/freshness, murky greens/comfort, browns/grounding, plums/longing, reds/love and whites/hope. The paint is caressed into place directly by hand wherever possible, as one would carefully mold dough for a summer fruit pie.
The directness of a circle within a square quite simply represents our self in relation to our environments. The line of the circle is the place of boundary, the edge that defines how we intersect with others and with the world.
These pieces seek to convey a truth that we hold a spectrum of emotional, mental, and physical realities that can both trap and free us, depending on our orientation. To deny deep longing or wild exuberance is to ignore a natural breadth of being. To think of ourselves as protected or separate from one another is to shut an ear to a subtle, yet persistent, whisper that we are all of one source.
If there were to be any message in this body of work, it would be that there is tremendous beauty to be gifted to one another by expanding our core vitality beyond our internal walls. To receive this message, abandon the construct of thought. Leave these words on the page in favor of intuition. Respond to the work from your heart.
